Baldwin Centennial Project Spotlights Trailblazing Writer

OAKLAND PUBLIC THEATER PRESENTS MULTIFACETED PROGRAMMING

August 1-4 Event Explores Race, Identity, and the American Experience

In honor of the 100th anniversary of James Baldwin's birth, Oakland Public Theater proudly presents the Baldwin Centennial Project from August 1-4, 2024. This collectible edition celebrates Baldwin's groundbreaking work and its enduring relevance in examining the realities of race and identity in America.

James Baldwin (1924-1987) was a visionary writer whose incisive prose and powerful social commentary left an indelible mark on American literature and culture. As a novelist, essayist, playwright, and poet, he fearlessly explored themes of race, identity, sexuality, and the complexities of the American experience.

The Baldwin Centennial Project will feature a range of captivating programming, including:

- Performances of his plays, including "The Amen Corner" and "Blues for Mister Charlie."
- Screenings of films adapted from his novels, such as "The Fire Next Time" and "Giovanni's Room."
- Visual art exhibitions showcasing works inspired by Baldwin's writings.
