Bat Tests Positive for Rabies in Raleigh County

Health Officials Issue Public Health Alert

The Beckley-Raleigh County Health Department has issued a Public Health Alert after a bat found in the county tested positive for rabies. According to the department, this is the first confirmed case of rabies in a bat in Raleigh County this year.

Symptoms of Rabies

Rabies is a fatal disease that can affect both humans and animals. Symptoms of rabies in animals can include:

  • Aggressive behavior
  • Paralysis
  • Drooling
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Seizures

Symptoms of rabies in humans are similar to those in animals, but can also include:

  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting
  • Hallucinations

How to Protect Yourself

The best way to protect yourself from rabies is to avoid contact with wild animals, especially bats. If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, wash the wound thoroughly with soap and water and seek medical attention immediately.

If you see a bat behaving abnormally, such as flying during the day or appearing disoriented, do not approach it. Call your local animal control agency or the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources.

Rabies Vaccination

If you are at high risk of exposure to rabies, such as if you work with animals or live in an area with a high incidence of rabies, you may want to consider getting vaccinated against the disease. The rabies vaccine is safe and effective and can help to protect you from infection.

For more information about rabies, please visit the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources website or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention website.
