North Carolina Daylight Saving Time Ends on November 5, 2023
Fall Back and Gain an Hour
Daylight saving time (DST) is a practice of advancing clocks during summer months so that evenings have more daylight and mornings have less.
However, the period of DST is coming to an end soon.
Residents of North Carolina will "fall back" one hour on Sunday, November 5, 2023, at 2:00 AM local time. Following the time change, sunrise and sunset will occur one hour earlier than the previous day.
Benefits of the Time Change
The end of DST brings several benefits, including:
- Extra hour of sleep: Gaining an extra hour of sleep can improve sleep quality and reduce the risk of fatigue-related accidents.
- Reduced energy consumption: With less daylight in the evenings, there is a decreased need for artificial lighting, leading to potential energy savings.
- Improved morning routines: The earlier sunrise may make it easier to wake up and get ready for the day.
Impact on Daily Life
The time change can temporarily disrupt daily routines, but here are some tips to minimize the impact:
- Adjust gradually: In the days leading up to the change, try going to bed and waking up 15-30 minutes earlier each day.
- Expose yourself to sunlight: Getting natural sunlight in the morning can help regulate your body's natural sleep-wake cycle.
- Avoid caffeine and alcohol before bed: Consuming these substances can interfere with sleep.
Exceptions to the Time Change
Not all of North Carolina observes DST. The following areas remain on standard time year-round:
- Cherokee Indian Reservation
- Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians Reservation
- Qualla Boundary
